The CMM (coordinate measuring machine) uses a robotic arm attached to a gantry. It moves around a sample object and touches the surface with a ruby-tip probe. The CMM takes measurements along the three X, Y and Z axes of the product. The coordinates are recorded within specialized software to give the user a better understanding of the geometrical features of the object, whether it be a small component or something as large as a vehicle. Coordinates from the CMM can be used to virtually replicate the entire object based on its geometrical characteristics. Coordinate measuring machines do not utilize invasive examination as seen in typical 2D layout projects.
