Welcome to another insightful interview where we delve into the world of brilliant minds at Nel PreTech Corporation. Today, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Mike Heim, the Director of Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) Services. With a passion for math and science, Mike's journey in CT scanning has been nothing short of exceptional.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Nel PreTech Corporation?
Mike Heim: Definitely! My name is Mike Heim, and I am the Director of Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) Services at Nel PreTech Corporation. I have always been fascinated by math and science, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Marquette University in 2009. During my time at Marquette, I also participated in academic research related to my field of study. After working as a staff physicist for Green Light Industries, I went back to school and obtained a Master of Science degree in Applied Physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Following my graduation, I joined Nel PreTech as an Applications Engineer. For the past eight years, I have been providing 3D scanning services and leading the CT services division.
Q: Your academic background and research experience are impressive. Could you tell us about your co-authored academic publications?
Mike Heim: Thank you! My passion for research has allowed me to contribute to the scientific community through co-authored publications. Some notable work was published in the journal "Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables" between May 2010 and September 2010. I am passionate about the advancement of knowledge in the field of atomic and nuclear data. I had the privilege to collaborate with a professor from the Illinois Institute of Technology and utilize CT equipment at Nel PreTech Corporation for our research. Through this collaboration, I co-authored publications on various topics related to additive manufacturing, exploring areas such as laser-beam powder bed fusion and microstructure-defect-property relationships of specific alloys. These publications were featured in respected journals like "Additive Manufacturing" and "Materials Science and Engineering: A."
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your role as the Director of Industrial Computed Tomography Services?
Mike Heim: One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the opportunity to interact with our customers and help them solve problems using CT scanning. CT technology has revolutionized the way we analyze and inspect objects non-destructively. By utilizing advanced imaging techniques, we can provide valuable insights and aid in the development and improvement of various industries. Seeing the impact our CT services have on our clients' projects and witnessing their success is truly fulfilling.
Q: How do you balance your work at Nel PreTech Corporation with your personal life?
Mike Heim: Balancing work and personal life is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. Outside of work, I prioritize spending quality time with my wife and three sons. Engaging in activities that allow me to recharge and rejuvenate is essential. Whether it's exploring nature, playing sports, or simply enjoying a family movie night, these moments are invaluable and help maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring students, engineers, and physicists?
Mike Heim: My advice to these aspiring individuals would be to never stop learning and expanding your knowledge. Engineering is a field that constantly evolves, so it's essential to stay curious and embrace new technologies and methodologies. Seek opportunities to gain practical experience, collaborate with others, and actively participate in research or projects relevant to your interests. Don't hesitate to ask questions and never underestimate the power of networking within the engineering community. Lastly, strive for a work-life balance as it enhances overall productivity and satisfaction.
