Dimensional inspection is the process of determining measurements of a manufactured part and comparing results with the specified requirements or tolerances within the drawing of that part. The tolerance refers to the acceptable deviation from the intended outcome.
Dimensional inspection is important for quality control, reducing product manufacturing cost, and increasing manufacturing capabilities.
This is a specialized field, but includes a wide variety of applications. Dimensional inspection can be useful in all phases of manufacturing including R&D, first article, cape studies, and final inspection.
Also called dimensional measurement, these services are used to provide value to the manufacturer by helping them operate in a more efficient way. By outsourcing dimensional measurement services to an accredited lab, the manufacturer can compare their actual product to what it is supposed to be.
Dimensional inspection or measurement is more than just the length, width, and height of an object. It is used to measure virtually any physical characteristic. Dimensional services are important to ensure things will fit together or work properly.
Measurement uncertainty and traceability are important principles when determining the accuracy of measurements in dimensional inspection.
MEASUREMENT UNCERTAINTY:
No dimensional measurement is exact. Uncertainty comes from calibration, equipment, alignment, and repeatability. Accredited labs will carry out analysis and experiments to determine the uncertainty of a measurement. There are some simple rules which allow us to state, at a given statistical confidence level, whether a measurement proves or disproves conformance.
TRACEABILITY:
Traceability means the end result of a measurement can be traced back to a calibrated measurement standard. This is done through documentation of the chain of calibrations each with a stated uncertainty.
