World Metrology Day 2017
Did you know that this Saturday, May 20th, is World Metrology Day? As a fully accredited A2LA dimensional inspection services company that performs almost any type dimensional inspection service you can imagine, we know a thing or two about metrology. For those who do not know, the International Bureau of Weights and Measurements (BIPM) defines metrology as “the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology.” At Nel Pretech (NPC) we use metrology every single day and thought it was only right to celebrate with the rest of the world and raise awareness on how important metrology is to the manufacturing and engineering industry.
Why May 20th?
BIPM specifically chose May 20th as World Metrology Day because on this day in 1875 when the Treaty of the Metre, aka the Metre Convention was signed, officially coordinating the development of the metric system for the world. We think it is so awesome that BIPM selected this particular day because when the treaty was signed it was the first time ever that the world decided it would work together with a coherent measurement system. There is already a surplus of sophisticated terminology that we use in our industry today, could you imagine what it would be like if it all was not consolidated? We would be forced be familiar with thousands of conversations and different terms depending on who or what part of the world we are working with. BIPM also chooses a theme for World Metrology Day, as a way to provide a spotlight on a particular industry. This year theme is ‘Measurements for Transport’. Transportation plays an instrumental role in the world we live in. We rely on transportation to move us to and from places. We rely on transportation to conduct business. We rely on transportation to feed our families. Accurate and precise measurement allow for efficient transportation and it is only appropriate to honor the transportation industry in this way.
So in summary, NPC will be celebrating World Metrology Day this Saturday, May 20th (That is in our laboratory with donuts and coffee on Friday) because metrology plays an active role not only in what we do each and every day, but it plays an active role in our world each and every day. Our dimensional inspection company would be nothing without metrology. We thank all of the scientists and engineers that came before us, for all of the work they have done for our industry. Whether it be dimensional inspections, reverse engineering, or industrial CT Scanning, we are here to put metrology to work to service clients of all kinds! Have a great World Metrology Day 2017, we cannot wait to hear about how you celebrated!
